According to an article in AARP magazine, touch may be one of the most essential senses. Unfortunately when a spouse or partner passes, the most difficult part of life going forward is the absence of human contact. In some nursing homes, administrators encourage touching, holding hands, and actual relationships to create bonds. It is also an excellent source to boost the immune system.
Therapeutic touch lowers levels of a stress hormone cortisol and increases the amount of oxytocin, the love hormone. This is the hormone responsible for the mother & child bonding. When we lay hands on one another, we tap into a deep association between touch & emotion that begin at the dawn of life.
Think about pet owners and the incredible feelings you experience when your cat or dog reaches out to you with their paw. Gently holding onto your leg while watching TV together. This too is a very important therapy used in many nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
So the next time you get a hug from someone, hold on just a little longer. The energy and the power of touch will nurture and fulfill your heart for a long while, not to mention theirs.
